View from the Bridge - Chymera

I love the way life works - the synchronicity of it all.  I guess its over a year ago I surfed onto this site and there on the front page was an interview with Chymera.  I had probably just downloaded a Mix Mag set which included a track called "Merde" from an artist named Chymera which I was loving.  But, and forgive me for saying this, I couldn't quite believe that this kind of music was coming from an Irish artist - it seemed so futuristic.  But I was delighted!! I continued to hear his name on the circuit and enjoy his music (love love love Fierenix!). Cut to last Friday where I got to see him live for the first time at my favorite club, Cielo. I had been plugging this gig on my meetup group and was glad to say we had about 6 people including my friend Angie who fair dues to her came out a second night til 5am, having seen Carl Cox there the night before.  Not to be disrepectful to any artist but her considered opinion was that he surpassed Mr. Cox!  Just lovely, lovely music. However my only 2 quibbles - I wanted him to play more of his own tunes (he played a fair bit) and also his set was too short. He played for about an hour and a half by my reckoning.

It was great to be with a crowd of obviously dedicated fans who get his music and love him.  We got to say hi afterwards and he is  a really nice person too - very humble and very talented.

Come back to NYC soon Chymera!!

View from the Bridge, Above and Beyond

Just a quick word about this gig last weekend. Halloween is a big deal here - lots of parties and lots of costumes. I had bought my ticket for Above and Beyond ahead of time and was very excited to see them in a bigger venue (saw them in April at Pacha).

Having been to Roseland last year for Armin van Buuren, I sort of knew that it would be jammed and crazy. But that's the deal with Halloween parties  and I expected it. But I have to say I was disappointed with Above and Beyond.  They played for two hours, came on around 2 and got off at 4am. Maybe it was also because it was daylights savings change over but it felt very short. I also thought that they would play a harder set which they didn't. Fedde le Grand opened and I had seen Fedde last year but really enjoyed his set way more than Above and Beyond.

Having said that, being that it was Halloween and I was out with my friends, I still had a good time!!  But might give Roseland a skip next year in favor of some of the more interesting parties around.

Thanks to Gar for the tip off earlier this year on Tom Middleton! I got to interview him and see him live at Electric Zoo. So delighted to have the chance to see him play again in a club setting. Tom plays a very wide range of music. His opening set at Zoo was chill and very different and then he pumped it up for his evening set onstage.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect what he'd bring to the table on Saturday last.  But it was house and dance all the way. Tom's energy is infectious. He just exudes enthusiasm for his craft and the energy exchange between him and crowd was tangible.  He kicked off after some great sets from Frank Chiarello and the Filthy Dukes (who played I guess a mix of electro and nu-disco).  And he didn't quit all night - ranging from upbeat stuff to some Latin beats and chill towards the end.  He also gave us all candy - literally sweets and lollipops for everyone!! You can't beat that!!

I've heard he's still in town and playing a very low key gig on Thursday that I'm going to check out!
