View from The Bridge - my first dj gig!Tagged in: Untagged
I'm a great believer in the power of positive thinking - The Secret etc. (although I won't buy or read that book 'cos its nothing that hasn't been published already) but I do believe that focused thinking can help bring good (and maybe bad) things to pass. Since I got involved in the clubbing scene here, I've been more and more drawn to the music and to creating my own mixes and then eventually to wanting to play out in a venue somewhere. It began to be all I could think about for the last 6 months! I literally spent most of my day listening to music and downloading songs I liked. Anyway through my meetup group, I met Mark - old school DJ who used to gig at The Roxy, Limelight - huge clubs back in the 90s and early o0's. He knew a venue. He had the gear and knew I wanted to play and was kind enough to trust that I might be able to deliver on my first outing, a reasonably solid set. All that came to fruition last Saturday night at AK Lounge, a small, cool spot on the upper West side. The rain did not let up all day or night and so we were nervous that we would have a lot of no-shows. But tell a gang of Irish people that there will be cheap drinks and you're guaranteed to fill the place! I will admit, I was nervous, mostly about whether my little system (Numark Total Controller, PC and Virtual DJ software) would behave as well as it did in my living room. I was prepared for it not to work and to have to use Marks Serato setup which is what I had learned in my class at Scratch Academy but had not been practicing on at all. But the DJ gods smiled on me and we got it all set up and hooked up! I started playing about 8.20 and got off at midnight!! What fun!! Many of my friends (none of whom are into EDM) came along and said they had a great night - a soft introduction for many to the dance scene as it wasn't a big techno club feel but more loungey! Mark came on after then and played a great 3 hours. I got to play some really awesome tunes from Deepak Sharma and Pablo Bolivar as yet unreleased!

APPLEBLIM & JOKER set for Dublin gigs in August.Tagged in: Untagged
Yesterday was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. One minute I'm sitting at my desk in work lamenting the fact that there are F##K all good dubstep/electronic gigs coming up in Dublin in the next few weeks & months. I was perusing the line up for the brainfeeder party this Saturday in London (Kode9 , Dorian Concept, GLK ,FlyLo , Samiyam )and I was half thinking : "Go on, just move. Move to London".
Then I hit the Bodytonic website, and there was a major surprise in store. I scrolled down through the events and I noticed 2 events in august that must have been recently posted. Could this be true ? Did my eyes deceive me ?

View from the Bridge - Water Taxi BeachTagged in: Untagged
Had a quiet weekend this past one as I went to visit a friend who lives in the boonies! Yeah, defo not for me, the country livin'! Weekend prior to this one, I went to a friends Indian Summer party. Really nice event in a bar on Lafayette Street. The DJ's played a mixture of club stuff with Indian Bhangra music (which is very popular now on account of Slumdog Millionaire). My friend Megha runs the NYC Bhangra Club. Anyway it made a change from regular club night so happy to check it out. However I was all geared up the next day for the Water Taxi Beach and Louie Vega. Water Taxi Beach is a newish event in the city. It's a man-made beach near the water in Astoria Queens. Outdoors, tents, beer and food. And that night it was free in. However the minute I set foot in the place, I got a weird vibe. Some friends from the meetup group were there already and wanted to leave. I thought it felt a bit 'rapey'! I could've been over-reacting cos I was cold and hungry and there wasn't too much in the way of food. So after about 30 minutes most of our group left. Vega wasn't going to come on til near 12 anyway and it didn't seem worth hanging around for. I had planned to go see minimal dj Guy Gerber that night but also bailed. |
